This idilic 2-person lodge is much in the style of the the Cairngorms National Park Design Award winning 'Woodman's Hut', opened in 2011. Perched, this time, at the edge of waterfowl ponds with native goldeneye & widgeon alongside mandarin, whistler ducks and the lazy Aylesburies, the cosy two-person 'Duck's Nest', shares happily the six secluded acres of woodland and garden grounds. Nearby are the Lookout five person Bunkhouse and 4-pitch summer only camping ground, all sheltered by ancient Caledonian pine trees. Red squirrels, deer, crested tits are your nearest neighbours along with the waterfowl. Built from local larch wood and Douglas Fir the 'Duck's Nest' is roofed in ancient, weathered Tomintoul stone and with woodwashed pine linings has perhaps a touch more elegance than you might expect. Rain water is gravity fed from the roof into two whisky barrels and then to the 100 year old brass tap at the sink. The king size Hebridean box bed with stargazer window above, wood burning stove and veranda are complemented by candle lanterns supported by some electric lighting, a gas cooking stove and oven, tiny fridge and a sumptuous soft leather sofa from which you can keep an eye on the ducks. The dining table is graced by two comfortable Edwardian carver dining chairs tempting you to linger over your meal overlooking the water. The veranda has its own breakfast table and two all weather rattan chairs. A chiminea wood burner for a log fire or BBQ stands nearby on the deck. Here in a small space is old-style charm, in keeping with some modern quirky style and dollops of profound tranquility. Ideally sited and well apart from other accommodation, the Ducks Nest was designed by David & Valery Dean and beautifully crafted by Rob Clarke and David Robson from the nearby Braes of Castle Grant. Timber has been brought from Altyre and Cromartie sawmills from which all windows and internal fittings have been hand made. The flooring is in oak. Other fitments & decoration are from artist/craftspersons affiliated to Creative Cairngorms. All paints used are eco registered. Tomintoul stone is, of course, from Tomintoul. Relax in our wood fired hot tub, infrared sauna. Experience massage treatments in our Wellbeing Studio, set on the edge of the forest. With its amazing views and wood burning stove, this space evokes calm; a space to unwind and let go.

Nestled in an acre field backed by swathes more of Old Caledonian pine, The Homestead is bespoke built with features much the same as in the award winning Woodman's Hut and the Duck's Nest. Artisan shaped elm work tops glisten with natural colour while supports of oak and beech together with reclaimed pine set the authentic tone of an otherwise honest, working hut. There's nothing to beat a breakfast cuppa facing the sunrise from the veranda basket chairs under the window. Next to The Homestead is a gentle cockerel-free hen house and an active polytunnel growing seasonal crops that you can pick your own. Settle on the nearby Poet's Seat where there are extensive views south to the summits of Cairngorm, Bynack Mor and the Tulloch Hills. 200 acres of heather and birch moorland adjoin the homestead supporting curlew, widgeon, hen harrier, woodcock, crested tit, oyster catcher and at least the sound of owl & capercaillie. Osprey and eagle sometimes visit. Roe deer come and go and red squirrels are in residence year round. Relax in our wood fired hot tub, infrared sauna. Experience massage treatments in our Wellbeing Studio, set on the edge of the forest. With its amazing views and wood burning stove, this space evokes calm; a space to unwind and let go.

Standing alone on the fringes of a seventy acre pinewood the intimately designed Woodman's Hut with veranda makes a rare hideaway for a couple. It looks south across the neighbouring one hundred acre moor to Bynack Mor and Cairngorm Mountain. The larch, pine and oak built hut is a throwback to the heady days when timber was extracted from these woods and sent to the River Spey for floating to the coast. This hut is smaller than those lived in by the Canadians, Newfoundlanders (Newfies) and Finns, the last of a long line of hardy men who worked the woods as far back as the 17th Century. Today, all is peaceful with red squirrels, otter, curlew, capercaillie, crossbills, crested tit, roe deer and high flying osprey as the hut's near neighbours. Eighty yards away through the wood are the two person waterside lodge, The Duck's Nest. Further away still is the tiny 4 pitch lightweight camping ground. In these six acres you will find, a flock of white Aylesbury ducks and many attractive small waterfowl frisking or idling on the pond. 'The Welcoming Seat' overlooking the water invites you to linger here; you may muse at the 'Poet's Seat' a few minutes walk higher up on the moor with a panoramic view and then, if you wish, explore the further 'Lettoch' moor, this one topped by a rare juniper forest and a near 360 degree vista. Hear the silence. Sense the forest. Drink deeply of the air from the high tops.
