The Serpent's Stone
Add to Itinerary

The Serpent's Stone is a large boulder on the north side of Loch Beanie with curious markings. The story goes that a witch transformed into a snake to hid there from a local laird who blamed her for the death of his son.

The stone can be accessed easily from the Compass Christian Centre just off the A93, or by the unclassified road from Forter to Auchavan and the Glen Beanie track by Dalvanie Farm.

The stone bears a curious twisting hole and several deep slashes, which were reputedly made by the local laird, who blamed a witch for the death of his infant son.  He came upon the witch one day and he drew his sword to kill her but was too slow and she changed into a viper and slid into the hole. In his frustration, the laird struck the stone with his sword. The witch taunted him from inside the stone “Laird! As long as you look at your empty cradle and I at my stone, we may meet and crack, but we can never be friends.
