Activities & Attractions

¬¬The community operated Braemar Castle is now closed for a £1.5M restoration.  Funded by Historic Environment Scotland, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and local fundraising, we hope to be able to welcome visitors back to an upgraded Castle in July 2023.¬¬

17th Century Castle with an interesting history.
Built in 1628 by the Earl of Mar as his Highland hunting lodge.
Burned in the first Jacobite uprising to keep Government soldiers away.
Owned by the leader of the 1715 rebellion who raised the Jacobite standard in Braemar.
Rebuilt as a garrison to house the Hanoverian troops.
Then refashioned into a beautiful family home for the chiefs of Clan Farquharson, hosting royal visitors and tenants.
Opened as a visitor attraction by the present Laird and his flamboyant first wife, Frances.

Since 2007 Braemar Castle has been successfully run by the community, who raised funds for essential roof repairs to keep their Castle open. Local volunteers and staff have welcomed and shared their knowledge and passion for the Castle with visitors from all around the world.

With its 'Raising the Standard'  project Braemar Castle is preparing to embark on its next evolution - a masterplan for the building, its grounds and a commitment to community engagement and learning.
