Braemar

In Braemar there’s an abundance of well-signposted, low-level walking which makes it a wonderful place for ramblers, who can look out at the many hills which surround the village and enjoy some sustenance in the cafes and restaurants.  It’s a wildlife hot spot and views are often accompanied by the sound of roaring deer stag or sightings of red squirrels and golden eagles.

The mountainous village of Braemar, part of Royal Deeside, is a great base for adventure or relaxation on the SnowRoads. There’s an abundance of well-signposted, low-level walking which makes it a wonderful place for ramblers, who can look out at the many hills which surround the village and enjoy some sustenance in the cafes and restaurants.

It’s a wildlife hot spot and views are often accompanied by the sound of roaring deer stag or sightings of deer, red squirrels and golden eagles.

There is the opportunity to take part in many sporting activities such as playing on Scotland’s highest 18-hole golf course, pony trekking, mountain biking, hang gliding and climbing.  Nearby Glenshee offers the largest ski and snowboard area in Scotland making Braemar a truly year-round destination.

Braemar is rich in history and heritage.  There are two castles in the village - Braemar Castle and the ruins of Kindrochit Castle - built by a medieval king.

On the first week of September each year, the village hosts the Braemar Gathering, widely regarded as the most famous event of its kind in the world.  Members of the royal family regularly attend and can be spotted laughing and enjoying the traditional Scottish games and clapping along to the pipe band and highland dancers.  The Queen’s castle, Balmoral, is in the small hamlet of Crathie and is a fantastic visitor attraction as well as the church the royals attend when they are in the area, Crathie Kirk.

Downie's Cottage

Downie's Cottage is located at the foot of Morrone with breathtaking views over the village of Braemar and the Dee Valley. The property was abandoned sometime between the wars and remained largely undisturbed complete with box bed and 'hingin lum'. Historic Scotland determined it as a building of national importance, listing it as Category A, and since then it has been lovingly restored to provide it with a new lease of life for the 21st Century as a fantastic holiday cottage. Sleeping 2, every effort has been made to provide comfortable and luxurious accommodation and also to provide a totally unique experience of living in an original 19th century cottage with all its original features retained and restored. Box bed, flag floors, exposed beams, limewashed walls and wooden 'hingin lum' are all retained and restored. The cottage has however been catapulted through time not only only with the installation of 'the electric light' (a first for Downies) and indoor plumbing (also a first for Downies), but with ground source underfloor heating, a fully equipped kitchen, and with the more intrusive ultra modern shower, TV and internet discreetly hidden away behind 18th century oak panelling. Outside is an idyllic seating area with petrified teak root table and chairs, a fire pit and a wooden hot tub where guests can enjoy splendid views over the Tomintoul parks to Braemar below. Or alternatively enjoy a seat by the pond and watch the trout rising or relax in the sauna/steam room.
